About Elaine
I am a registered care aide and hold a diploma in yoga therapy. From an early age I was curiously passionate about connecting with people. Working for over 6 years as a home support worker I became very accustomed to assessing the needs of others and recognizing the reward that accompanied responding to these needs. I realized how easy it was to make people feel respected and looked after and recognized how much I got out of doing this. This desire came with a sincere willingness to be affected by the people in my life and work. This willingness and the lack of resources for support for individuals working in the system left me struggling with burnout early in my career.
After my own experience with care giver burnout, I felt a deep imbalance in my life, a fearful sense of being ungrounded or disconnected. Wanting desperately to feel whole again I enrolled in a yoga therapy program as a way to refuel the vessel and give to myself what I felt I had been giving away to others. It began with a desire to deepen my yoga practice and it gave me the tools to better serve others without giving myself away.
The course enriched my understanding of human dynamics by teaching me how to apply yogic practices to better understand my connection to myself. The 2 year program consisted of yogic philosophy and techniques, utilizing the holistic perspective of an individual as than just the sum of their parts. An in depth understanding of western anatomy and physiology was coupled with explorations in person centered somatic therapy -affording students like myself a unique array of psychological knowledge and counselling skills.
During my schooling, a special client entered into my life who was looking for a private yoga teacher to come to her home. She was living with MS and had limited physical ability yet she was open to creating a practice that worked for both of us. This experience motivated me to merge the skills of my home support work and yoga therapy into a cohesive whole. The more I learned about human connection the more I understood that I assist in supporting others more profoundly by allowing myself to be affected in the process.
